It's that time of year again, when we cautiously venture into the snowy tundra and try to get a ride in here and there without being covered in a foot of snow. Our Cold Rolls are designed for more experienced winter riders, but anyone who just wants to be out on a bike after being shut in for the last month is welcome to join; just make sure you wear enough layers and protection from the cold. These off-season rides will not be planned weeks or months ahead like our regular season rides but will pop up whenever we feel like we can get enough of a break in the weather to drop one in the schedule. We've created a roster of off-season rolls in locations where we typically don't ride during the season, and today we announce our first winter roll, this Saturday, January 25, in Lakewood.
We will depart Madison Park at 1 PM from the parking lot off Madison itself, next to the public swimming pool complex, for an eight mile ride that may turn into a shorter one depending on local conditions this weekend.
You'll want to make sure you have a bike that can handle snowy, icy conditions, as we may still see a bit of ice on the roads. Snow tires are great, but not everyone has them. Fat tire bikes are ideal for the conditions, but any bike can be ridden in snow with enough care and concentration; some people even suggest thin road tires are the best as they can cut right through the snow. Ice is another matter, of course, and if you don't feel stable enough as a rider to navigate potential ice hazards, we suggest sitting this one out.
This is an officially unsupported ride and not part of Slow Roll's official schedule, so you ride entirely at your own risk. We will have some squad members along to help out, but expect a skeleton crew.
