Fundamentals of GD&T

Drawing Rules, Inch/Metric Dimensioning Units, Angular Units, Features and Features of Size, Datums, Terms used in GD&T, Bonus Tolerance. Definitions and Inspection Techniques of 14 Geometric Characteristic Symbols.


Form – Flatness, Straightness, Circularity, Cylindricity, Rule#1

Orientation – Perpendicularity, Parallelism, Angularity

Location – Position, Symmetry, Concentricity, Coaxially

Runout – Circular Runout, Total Runout

Profile – Profile of a Line, Profile of a Surface


Hands-on laboratory exercise


Datum Targets for irregular surfaces (point, line and area datum targets), Datum Feature Selection Criteria, Understanding feature modifier for bonus tolerancing, Worst-case inner and outer boundaries for internal and external features of size, Virtual and Resultant Conditions, 3-2-1 Principle for Datums at RMB, Effect of datum order of precedence.


Design of functional gages for feature - MMC modifier with RMB, Changes in functional gauge design based on order of precedence of datums at RMB, Datum boundary with modifiers, MMB and LMB, calculation of datum shift tolerances, design of functional gauges with feature modifier, MMB, with different order of precedence of datums.
