COFFEE WITH A CURATOR | Monday, December 9, 2024 | 10:30a | Free admission.Merry Company
Inspired by the current season of getting-together, this talk will focus on artworks in the FIA’s collection that are in the theme of ‘merry company.’ The term is for a genre of painting that began in the Netherlands in the 17th century that features a small group of people enjoying themselves–typically in Taverns or at debaucherous parties. Today, contemporary artists continue to focus on group scenes, likely inspired by this tradition. Pulling from artworks in the FIA’s permanent collection, this talk by Associate Curator Rachael Holstege will look at traditional depictions of merry company but also how other artists across time periods, cultures, and mediums, have approached the subject of togetherness.
ASL Interpretation is made possible by Ford Foundation Equity Fund of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint.
