Join us for Coffee & Conversation at DFAC, where art and insight blend over a great cup of coffee. Sponsored by DFAC’s Sterling Society — with coffee generously provided by Lane’s Lemonade — each session features a guest artist sharing their creative journey. Curatorial Director Danny Olda leads a Q&A to explore the story behind the artist and their work, followed by a guided gallery tour where you can get a closer look and ask questions about their inspiration and techniques.
Admission is $5, or free for DFAC members—an enriching way to connect with art and the community.
About Latonya Hicks
Born in Macon, Ga and raised in Jacksonville, FL, the middle child of 3 girls. Latonya Hicks is a visual artist who lives and works in Clearwater and St. Pete, FL. Her recent exhibitions include the Gulf Coast Artists’ Alliance, St. Pete, FL; FloridaRAMA, St. Pete, FL; Tampa Museum of Fine Arts, Tampa, FL; Tully-Levine, St. Pete, FL; and The Morean Art Center, St. Pete, FL. Latonya received an MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University and is currently the President of the Florida Art Education Association and the Secondary Visual Art Integration Coordinator responsible for guiding 6-12 art teachers in Pinellas County. She is currently exhibiting her work at the Dunedin Fine Art Center in the exhibition When the Lights Came On: Shared Memories and the Things We Keep.
Latonya’s work lives at the intersection of memory, identity, and cultural lineage. In her current exhibition at DFAC, When the Lights Came On: Shared Memories and the Things We Keep, she presents ten circular mixed-media assemblages created from found and gifted objects—beads, lunchboxes, Pez dispensers, and other familiar relics from the 1980s and 90s. These materials become vessels for storytelling, reflecting childhood, home, and the women who shaped her life.
Inspired by her grandmothers and family “leading ladies,” Hicks transforms everyday objects into richly layered works that honor legacy, resilience, and care. Her pieces feel both deeply personal and widely relatable, inviting viewers to recognize fragments of their own memories within her work.
