"So who's playing this thing? (Now with a slight lineup change below)
FACS
Once again featuring their original lineup of former members of Disappears, this three piece is comprised of Brian Case, Noah Leger, and Jonathan van Herik. Hailing from Chicago, FACS create music that's minimalistic noise rock. Their brand of post punk is stark with driving, intense rhythms. Buzzing, repetitive guitar melodies and basslines are trance inducing. In April they released a 7" that was recorded at Electrical Audio with Steve Albini (RIP).
Menthol
A keystone Champaign-Urbana band formed in the early 90's, first as Mother and later as Menthol. They have witty, biting lyrics put to catchy melodies backed with that classic Champaign-Urbana guitar fuzz sound. Like if Devo were suave. They've played a couple other reunion shows in the last year and the setlists have been very heavy on the Mother - Gold Record LP songs with a few from the Menthol self-titled album and nothing so far from Danger: Rock Science (boo). Lead singer/guitarist Balti de Ley was briefly in an early version of Hum and can be heard on their super early album Fillet Show.
Sweet Cobra
Sweet Cobra can't make it this year! 😢 Hope to see them back again soon.
Terminus Victor
Filling in for Sweet Cobra are CobraFest favorites and long-time CU rockers Terminus Victor. Simultaneously heavy and high energy, both sludgy and dynamic. This trio hits you with a sound that seems greater than what three people should be able to produce. Their fourth album Everending, released last November, was recorded by Matt at his Earth Analog studio and mixed by James Treichler, who helped with engineering for Inlet.
Castor
Castor were a sadly underrated band from CU in the 90's. A midwestern indie/emo band with a tinge of math rock in the vein of Braid, American Football, and Shiner. Known for their intricate time changes, fluid melodies, and layered instrumentation. This is Castor's second appearance this millennium, the first being in 2018 when they opened for Hum at Delmar Hall in St. Louis.
Centaur
This is Matt Talbott's 2000-era band. They put out a stellar album in 2002 called In Streams. The three piece is rounded out by Jim Kelly on drums (ex-Lovecup, another 90's era CU powerhouse) and Derek Niedringhaus who is pulling double duty at this show by providing bass for both Castor and Centaur. In a lot of ways Centaur sounds not unlike what you would expect a pared down Hum to sound like, but they really do deserve to be considered their own thing. More mature, more chill. Love that fucking organ. It's a study in beauty, sound, and grief. Matt has recently said that they're continuing to record their second album. Slowly but surely, folks.
Yap Trap
Champaign-Urbana based Yap Trap is a relatively new outfit. This power trio with two singer-songwriters and a drummer puts out high energy 70's style punk." -Cassie Connor
"Put that on your calendar and let's hang out. Weather forecast is a high of 112 degrees with intermittent sideways rain. I love it. I'm soaking in it. Suggested donation is $25 clams American, if ya got it. And i think you do. I'm almost sure of it. Parking lot margs, tacos, atari 2600, music indoors and out, great sounding analog PA...this place has everything. You have to see it to believe it. Please do. Music will start around 4:30. Many more details to follow. See ya then/there. Luv!" -mt
