COAT Twilight Seminar 2 April 2025 - Yarning Circle and discussion : Creating culturally aware, sensitive, inclusive, and safe tribunal hearing environments for First Nations peoples
The Victorian Chapter of the Council of Australasian Tribunals ('COAT') regularly arranges and hosts Twilight Seminars and Conferences for members of state and federal tribunals (such as the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, Administrative Review Tribunal, Mental Health Tribunal etc) and legal representatives that appear before those tribunals.
Our next Twilight Seminar is proposed to be a conversational, sharing of stories, in the yarning format. It will be a discussion with the attendees which will focus on initiatives to create a culturally aware, sensitive, inclusive, and safe tribunal hearing environment for First Nations peoples.
The organisers acknowledge that there are no simple answers or quick fixes. However, the Twilight Seminar is being offered to provide a forum for COAT members to discuss and gain a better understanding about what ‘cultural awareness and safety’ might mean for how tribunal members are trained and how hearings can be conducted.
