In Fall 2019, a major exhibit opened at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in celebration of the 2020 centennial anniversary of women’s suffrage in the United States. Within a few months, the pandemic caused museums throughout the country to close their doors. Since many remembrances of the suffrage movement were impacted by COVID-19, the Society welcomes the opportunity to look back at this significant milestone. On Thursday, November 14, 2024, Kate Clarke Lemay, Ph.D., will present a lecture based on the National Portrait Gallery exhibit “Votes for Women: A Portrait of Persistence,” which she curated. Dr. Lemay holds a dual Ph.D. in American art history and American studies from Indiana University Bloomington, where she also completed her M.A. in art history. She joined the National Portrait Gallery as a historian in 2015. During her tenure, she has served as the founding director of PORTAL, the National Portrait Gallery’s Scholarly Center, and as the founding coordinating curator for the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative.
The accompanying catalogue for “Votes for Women,” edited by Dr. Lemay, won the 2021 Smithsonian Secretary’s Prize for Excellence in Research. During her time at the National Portrait Gallery, she curated numerous other exhibitions, including 2017’s “Marlene Dietrich: Dressed for the Image” and 2023’s “1898: U.S. Imperial Visions and Revisions.”
The Fall Program will be held at 6 p.m. at the A.W. Jones Heritage Center and will also be available via livestream. Society members attend the lecture free of charge, and the cost for non-members is $10. Registration for the program is required.
