RSPB Dungeness: We will spend most of the day exploring the unique shingle landscape of the RSPB reserve, just in from the Kent coast. It provides some exciting birdwatching as a variety of hirundines, waders and passerines stop to feed here before beginning their migration, including Whinchat and Wheatear.Facilities: Hides, viewing screens, toilets, visitor centre, picnic area. Refreshments should be available (tea, coffee, crisps, ice cream).
Distances and accessibility: Main route is a circular trail of 1.7 miles. Options to extend walk up to 4 miles. Paths are hard packed shingle or gravel with occasional loose stones. Benches every 150–200 metres.
Admission charges: No admission charge but donations appreciated if not a member of RSPB
Dungeness Beach: Mid-afternoon, we will move to Dungeness Point to explore the drifts of shingle around the Bird Observatory, visit the beach, do some sea watching and look for birds attracted to the cliff-like power station, especially Black Redstart.
Facilities: Cafe and toilets
Distances and accessibility: No set route and plenty of options on distance to walk but all are very short. Beach and pebble bank are challenging to walk on; shingle drifts less so but you can easily keep to tarmac if you wish

Coach pick ups: Hitchin: 7.30am. Letchworth: 7.45am. Stevenage: 8.00am.
