About this Event
This course is the second class in our CNC training series, focusing on hands-on machine operation. Building on the concepts from WOOD150 - CNC Basics, this class will teach you how to safely operate the Avid CNC, from powering it on to running a complete cut. We’ll cover essential topics like work-holding methods to secure materials, performing tool changes, and setting up the machine for accurate cutting. The class will conclude with each participant running a basic project, reinforcing the skills needed for independent CNC work. This course will give you the necessary operation skills for the practical test.

As part of this course, you’ll learn:
- Machine Operation – Powering on, homing, and setting work coordinates.
- Work-Holding Methods – Clamps, screws, tape, and other methods.
- Tool Changes – Changing and zeroing bits properly.
- Running a Basic Project – Loading toolpaths, checking settings, and executing a cut.

Hello everyone! I’m John. I’ve been passionate about woodworking for about six years and am really enthusiastic about fostering a community within CCM. Originally from Lubbock, TX, I relocated to Denver in mid-2016 to pursue a career in software engineering. I’m eager to teach classes and contribute to expanding both the woodshop and our community offerings at the Makerspace. Besides woodworking, I have a keen interest in 3D design and printing, software development, gaming, and climbing. I live nearby, so you’ll probably see me around quite often! I look forward to connecting with all of you and building something great together.
