Course Description:
Through scripture, we receive knowledge we cannot receive in
any other way, knowledge that comes to us through supernaturally inspired revelation. One of the most important revelations the scripture teaches concerns the essential nature of God. The Bible unfolds the mystery that there is only one God and yet, He exists as three persons. We may call them persons, personalities, hypostases. But our language is inadequate to describe the “Threeness of God.” When we think of God as three persons, we think immediately of three entities, self-sufficient in themselves, existing and functioning independently of one another. This is the image our language conveys, but it is both true, and untrue at the same time. This is the mystery of the triunity of God, One but Three, Three but One.
This course will centre on the third “Person” of the Godhead. We will be concentrating on one of the most profound and distinctive revelations of the Bible, about the “person” and work of the Holy Spirit. While some studies of the Holy Spirit begin at Shavuot/Pentecost, we will be examining essential scriptures beginning with the first verses of Genesis, to last verses of the Book of Revelation. Beyond this, in exploring the “Threeness” of God, we are going to examine the roots of this truth in Second Temple Jewish thought that predates Yeshua's time. What many people do not know is that Jewish Monotheism as it is expressed today, was not the only understanding of the nature of God in Yeshua's day.
Many people already had a “binary” concept of the Godhead and we will explore why this was so in greater detail.
We will also be covering all the types of material you would expect in a course of this nature. The role of the Holy Spirit in the Tanach and B'rit Hahadasha as an empowering, miracle working and revelatory Agent in both. His role in salvation, regeneration, teaching, guidance, empowering for ministry and forming the image of Messiah within us. As well as Spirit baptism, and the different views of Spirit baptism, and the distribution of and function of the spiritual gifts. We will also discuss the ongoing debate between Continuationists, those often-called Charismatics in the church, and Cessationists, those called non-Charismatics or Conservatives. But above all, how God reveals Himself to us, works in us and through us by the Holy Spirit who He sent to us as is His personal Agent
on earth.
About the Instructor:
