Overview of the course:
This workshop covers everything you need to get a clubsport wiring project from the planning stage, to a built wiring harness. The course is designed for those looking to produce vehicle harnesses with automotive wire.
We will work on a project loom across the day, this loom design covers multiple build techniques and materials to maximise your learning.
Workshop Theory Topics
To reinforce your understand we will also cover the fundamentals of the following essential theory topics:
- Simple guide to planning and designing a wiring loom
- Making a basic pinout and layout sheet
- Guide to easy mocking up for good fit
- Learn why we twist cable legs
- Essential rules for laying in CAN wires
- Order of assembly theory - overhead and checklist
- List of over sleeving methods theory – overhead
- Guide to suitable and common connector families
- How to select the appropriate wire gauge
Workshop Practical Exercises
The practical loom building will guide you through the following:
- Wire cutting and layout
- Creating a quality twisted pair
- Twisting and laying in a CAN wire pair
- Bundling and twisting techniques are covered as we draw the loom together before sleeving and wrapping with appropriate materials
- Defining and binding transitions with polyamide and fibre tape
- Fibre tape wrapping harness legs
- Heat sleeving a section of the loom and adding ‘glueline’ transitions
- Wire stripping and terminating several common connector types
If time permits at the end of the day we will aim to cover the basics of making high flexibility crimped battery cable assemblies.

Prerequisite skills:
Whilst no prior soldering experience is required, experience of general bench-top and detailed manual work is strongly advised to get the most from this workshop. A good level of manual dexterity and good close up eyesight will be required.
**The workshop involves working with hot equipment, a safety briefing will be given.
Tools
Where possible we will guide you on affordable and effective tools and equipment so you can setup your workplace or race truck with solder kit, that wont break the bank.

Certification
That's not all, you will also receive a WireTrain Training Certificate of Achievement along with a Certification of Attainment that you can provide to your employer as part of your personal CPD, within 14 days of completion of the course.
