About this Event

As a part of Tokiwa T. Smith Consulting work to highlight racial inequities and systematic racism in education and philanthropy, we are partnering with IKAM Productions to raise awareness about how school discipline policies impact Black girls. We are hosting a documentary screening of Clothed Minds, directed and produced by Carletta S. Hurt. After the documentary screening, a panel discussion will take place with experiments in education, mental health, government and philanthropy as well as Black girls.

Clothed Minds is an award-winning documentary focusing on the effects that school dress
code policies have on Black girls in the Washington DC public and charter schools. Based
on the report Dress Coded: Black Girls, Bodies, and Bias in DC Schools from the National
Women’s Law Center, Clothed Minds seeks to explore the impact of disproportionately
enforcing dress codes on Black girls over other races and genders.

The harsh punishments were proven to lead to detrimental effects on the girls’ school
performance, self-esteem, and even the ability to find and maintain work as adults. Clothed
Minds seeks to convey this information through extensive interviews with psychologists,
local community activists, the founders of the initial study as well as first-hand accounts
from Black girls that attended DC public schools and those that contributed to the report. We seek to spark action for other schools to review, revise, and rewrite these policies with
the help of black girls.
