St. James Coffee will be CLOSED on Monday, December 8th to celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, Mother of God. Catholics are obligated to attend Mass today! St. James is closed on all Holy Days of Obligation, which is why we are closed every Sunday :-)The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception highlights Mary's freedom from Original Sin. Mary was conceived and born free from original sin, the inherited inclination toward evil that affects humanity. As the New Ark of the Covenant that carried the presence of God, her womb was a sacred place.
This freedom was not due to Mary's own actions but was a singular grace and privilege granted by God in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of humankind. Jesus was her Savior.
The feast emphasizes Mary's status as "full of grace," a key aspect of her role as the mother of Jesus and a perfect example of what God can achieve. Mary is the highest of God's human creation, our best example of how to follow and love Jesus. Who could love Jesus more than his mother?
