An adventurous portrait in the Close-up Series focusing on Petra van der Heide, the Concertgebouworkest’s principal harpist.
For many years Concertgebouworkest musicians have been performing their own programmes in the Recital Hall. The intimate chamber music concerts Close-up are organised by the Friends of the Concertgebouw and the Concertgebouworkest. The concerts performed here are given only once and can be heard nowhere else!
In this Close-up concert, the harp takes centre stage. The orchestra’s principal harpist Petra van der Heide and other Concertgebouworkest musicians will be treating you to a compelling programme featuring chamber works from the romantic era to today.
In a colourful series of compositions, the harp takes on an ever-different character – Romantic in Fauré’s Fantaisie for flute and harp, virtuoso in César Franck’s Prelude, Fugue and Variations, intimate in Hindemith’s Sonata for Solo Harp, adventurous in Tan Dun’s In Distance and dreamy in Pierné’s Impromptu-caprice. Fairy-tale effects feature in Saint-Saëns’s Fantaisie for violin and harp. Finally, with his colourful and inventive Quintet, the musicians make an appeal for the French composer Jean Cras, whose music has undeservedly fallen into oblivion.
