About this Event
We are excited to announce our Los Angeles premiere screening of Close to Home, presented in collaboration with LA Emissary, Housing Now! California and The Los Angeles LGBT Center. The film will be screened at The Renberg Theatre, located at The Village at Ed Gould Plaza.
Close to Home was produced by Patrisse Cullors under her production company, Abolitionist Entertainment, with filmmaker Whitney Skauge and filmed during Patrisseโs time as Creative Strategist for the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture alongside the Los Angeles County Homeless Initiative. The film focuses on members of the Youth Advocates from the LA Emissary as they share their lived experiences of homelessness and reimagine a future where housing is a human right.
Close to Home is the winner of Best Documentary Film at the LGBTQ+ Toronto & Los Angeles Film Festival and was a Semi-Finalist for the Seattle Film Festival.
The Los Angeles Emissary, a project of Community Initiatives, aims to prevent and end youth homelessness in L.A. County by positioning youth and young adult leaders with lived experience of homelessness and system involvement as co-decision makers within the homeless response system; training a network of young people across L.A. County with skills needed to become advocates around funding and policy priorities related to homelessness; and engaging in collaborative decision making to address youth homelessness with young people, funders, providers, county, and system partners.
Housing Now! is a tenant-led statewide coalition of 150+ organizations fighting for housing justice in California. This year, the coalition is co-leading the Affordable California Campaign, a package of bills that would strengthen tenant protections, lower the rent cap, and fund affordable housing so that all Californians can have a stable place called home.
The Los Angeles LGBT Center is the world's largest direct service provider and center for LGBTQ+ people, offering a holistic model of care that includes healthcare, housing, legal aid, and advocacy.
