This month at Close Readings we gather in the kitchen and think together about forming communities – and who is included in those communities – as we continue readings on kitchens, sustainability and invisible labour.Françoise Vergès is a political scientist, historian, activist and public educator whose work focuses on postcolonial studies and decolonial feminism. In this rather long text, Vergès asks ‘who cleans the world?’ and considers how colonial histories and systems of racial exploitation continue to shape the way waste, resources and environmental destruction are distributed across the globe. The concept of ‘waste’ is not only environmental, says Vergès, but also social, with communities treated as disposable under capitalist and colonial frameworks.
