Climate Justice and Human rights: What is needed to support climate activists at risk?

During New York Climate Week, Climate Activist Defenders will be hosting an enlightening event to explore the critical intersections of climate activism, human rights defense, and the escalating criminalization of environmental defense activities worldwide.

We will share cases of climate activists and environmental defenders organizing on the frontlines and resisting corporate persecution, followed by a discussion on ongoing initiatives aimed at safeguarding environmental defenders and advancing climate justice. Our intention is to encourage a collective conversation about, what are the risks of carrying out our work? And what do at-risk climate activists need to be safe? From an approach of movements but also funders, we will challenge the distribution of resources in the space, from community organized mutual aid to long-term funding for these safety and security support structures, as well as the challenges to achieve this. This will be a key moment for sharing the results of the impact report of Climate Activist Defenders, summarizing the last 2.5 years of CAD’s operations
