About this Event

Guangzhou American Center Presents

Climate Communication Book Club Series

This series is designed to enhance reading and critical thinking skillsets, while at the same time learning about different cultural contexts of climate communication.  Expected outcomes include the ability to closely analyze the literature we discuss, while also being able to consider our own personal perspectives, and how that knowledge of self is reflected in our own understanding and actions on climate change.

Teachers and students who are interested in participating in a dynamic Book Club, who want to discuss varying viewpoints on Climate Change, and who value a platform where unique ideas are shared and respected are encouraged to join and participate.

This book discussion series will be conducted in English and facilitated by English Language Specialist, Matthew Jellick. Every month, we will read selections from different books written by authors with diverse and unique backgrounds.

Sign up now for all the four book clubs. Those who attend all four workshops will receive a certificate upon completion.

The Guangzhou American Center will only seat 70 visitors for this event.  The event is first-come, first-served, and will close when the event is full.  Reservation does not guarantee entry.  Thank you for your understanding.

Please note that we will be discussing complex topics, and that the series is not intended for children.

Location: Guangzhou American Center, U.S. Consulate General Guangzhou 美国驻广州总领事馆美国中心(珠江新城华就路43号公务访客入口)

In this workshop we will examine the gender dichotomy as it applies to climate change, and how women are directly affected, yet oftentimes, are oftentimes not equally represented when it comes to directing and implementing climate policy. We will discuss ideas, research and campaigns that women around the world are leading to help make a lasting impact on the future of our planet.

Climate Communication Book Club II:

Reading Excerpt: “Fresh Banana Leaves: Healing Indigenous Landscapes Through Indigenous Science”

Author: Jessica Hernandez

Time/Date: Saturday, November 2, 2024, 10:00am - 12:00pm

Location: Guangzhou American Center, U.S. Consulate General Guangzhou 美国驻广州总领事馆美国中心(珠江新城华就路43号公务访客入口)

Indigenous communities are among the most affected by climate change, yet indigenous science is not discussed in mainstream environmental policy or discourse. In this workshop, we will talk about the role of environmental knowledge and visions which have been around for millennia which can perhaps shed light on our current climate crisis.

Climate Communication Book Club III:

Reading Excerpt: “Tales of Two Planets: Stories of Climate Change and Inequity in a Divided World”

Editor: John Freeman

Time/Date: Saturday, December 21, 2024, 10:00am - 12:00pm

Location: Guangzhou American Center, U.S. Consulate General Guangzhou 美国驻广州总领事馆美国中心(珠江新城华就路43号公务访客入口)

Our third workshop will be global in nature, reading stories from Asia, Africa, and the Americas, by storytellers who hail from places under the most acute stress. Climate change is making already dire inequalities much worse, and we will take a critical look at how this disparity is perpetuated. We discuss a call to action, using examples from our readings, and try to establish a code of conduct, taking into account our own personal realities.

Climate Communication Book Club IV:

Reading Excerpt: “Dear Human at the Edge of Time: Poems on Climate Change”

Editors: L.A. Igloria, A. Cassinetto & J.S. Hoffman

Time/Date: Feb, 22, 2025

Location: Guangzhou American Center, U.S. Consulate General Guangzhou 美国驻广州总领事馆美国中心(珠江新城华就路43号公务访客入口)

Finishing our workshop series with some creativity, we will continue our climate discussion through the art of poetry analysis, accepting an invitation to reimagine the relationship between ourselves and the world. Looking at climate change through the perspective of possibility instead of gloom, we will read poetry which highlights our role going forward...
