In the late 1950s and early 1960s, there wasn’t a living room television that didn’t have America’s favorite comedic country bumpkin, Charley Weaver, regularly on the screen. Created by Cliff Arquette, the character of Charley Weaver not only entertained millions of Americans but also educated them about the historic battle of Gettysburg. Join Glenn Corbett as he tells the story of Arquette and his “Soldiers Museum” on Baltimore Street. Corbett will trace Arquette’s life as an entertainer as well as his multiple talents including wood carving. Newly discovered archival materials that tell a much larger story of Gettysburg’s centennial years, including Arquette’s battlefield preservation efforts, will be discussed.
