Cleveland Memorial Bridges Loop Open House

In 2018, Leadership Cleveland LC2 Fellows sought a project that would help strengthen the physical connections between the Downtown and the city's neighborhoods.

The project they chose was called the Memorial Bridges Loop.

Soon thereafter, the City of Cleveland, Trust for Public Land, Bike Cleveland and other partners began the process of making the project a reality.

The Cleveland Memorial Bridges Loop will use excess road capacity to create a separated bicycle and pedestrian path on Huron Rd. and Ontario Ave., linking the protected bicycle lane & sidewalk on the Detroit-Superior (Veterans Memorial) Bridge with the existing separated multi-use path near and on the Lorain-Carnegie (Guardians) Bridge.

The project will complete a crucial gap in Cleveland's bike and pedestrian network and is another important puzzle piece in creating a network of stress-free bike/pedestrian accommodations that connect Downtown to the city's neighborhoods.

• March 2018: Feasibility Study completed by Leadership Cleveland
• April 2018: Initial stakeholder presentation with Trust for Public Land and Cleveland City Planning Commission
• August 2021: City of Cleveland engages consultant to engineer and develop cost estimates
• March 2022: City of Cleveland begins seeking funding for construction
• July 2022: Rep. Shontel Brown secures $432,000 in Community Project Funding for construction of the Memorial Bridges Loop sections on Ontario Ave and Huron Rd
• January 2024: The City of Cleveland secures full funding for the project through commitments from NOACA and City funds, totaling an additional $1.1M 
• January-October 2025: City and ODOT move forward with design and engineering plans + community engagement
• June 2026: Construction begins (14 months)
