Join Capital Region Land Conservancy and the City of Richmond Parks and Recreation for a clean-up event on Saturday, June 1st from 9:00am - 12:00pm at Mayo Island. This volunteer event is in celebration of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's "Clean the Bay Day" and will help beautify what will become the largest addition to the James River Park System. CRLC is proud to have assisted the City of Richmond with the acquisition of this 15-acre historic location in the James River. Register to volunteer today!

About Mayo Island:
Forty years ago, the City of Richmond’s 1983 Master Plan noted “the conversion of Mayo Island into public open space is recommended due to its accessibility by City residents, including the handicapped, the availability of excellent fishing opportunities, and the potential for boating access.” In 2024, that vision is closer to reality as the City of Richmond has purchased the property for future park use.
Mayo Island ranks among the most important properties to be conserved in the Commonwealth of Virginia according to the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation’s ConserveVirginia model. It ranks among the Top 10 Percent of lands due to its significance for Cultural & Historic Preservation, Floodplains and Flooding Resilience, and Scenic Preservation.
About Clean the Bay Day:
Coordinated by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, this annual event held on the first Saturday in June brings together thousands of Virginians to the rivers, streams, beaches, and inland parks of the Chesapeake Bay watershed to remove harmful litter and debris.
Clean the Bay Day has been a staple for Virginia's Chesapeake Bay community since its inception more than three decades ago. A true Virginian tradition, it is an annual opportunity for individuals, families, military installations, businesses, clubs, civic and church groups to give back to their local waterways.
