About this Event
Claydoscope is a community project initiated by Kaixiang Zhang in 2023. It originated from one of Kai's daydreams where he imagined holding a kaleidoscope and looking out at the ever-changing world until one slipped out of his hand and broke into pieces, which he picked up and ate to be taken to the next dream.
This imagery gradually took shape in Kai's interactions with people and the environment in the Eastbourne community, culminating in a kaleidoscope piece made from wild clay, gummy candy and aluminium foil.
Through a series of workshops, Kai hopes to invite more people to experience the simple but creative methods of the Claydoscope project and discover the creativity in everyday materials.
The adult workshop will be a three-and-a-half-hour exploration of wild clay and its creative potential, starting with the story of Claydoscope. We will be making colourful clay slips from wild clay collected around Eastbourne and experiencing the method of making a two-piece plaster mould for slip casting.
Free to attend, booking required. All materials will be provided.
Kai is a neighbour who lives in Eastbourne. Drawing inspiration from intuitive imagery and moments in life, he wants to open up a state of "in-between", creating a poetic sense in chance encounters to temporarily detach the viewer from the inertia of objectified daily life, thus gaze into the distance for the nothingness beyond the boundary.
