w/ Amy HiggasonSaturday September 20
9am-noon Morning Session
1-4pm Afternoon Session
$50 each
This class is for students who are comfortable making their own work and want to explore new ways to decorate it. Watch multiple demonstrations by potter Amy Higgason as she discusses how she makes a “series of decisions” to create fully realized compositions on her wheel thrown and hand built pieces. An open dialog during the demonstrations will be encouraged. Time will be allowed at the end of each session for individual questions about the student’s own work.
The Morning Session will focus on carving and stamping techniques. Amy will demonstrate both conventional clay tools and other objects that she uses to make marks. Making and using your own clay stamps and sprig molds will be discussed. Amy will show how she divides a form in to sections and sets up her compositions. Symmetry versus Asymmetry will be explored as she combines patterns and free hand carving on multiple pieces.
The Afternoon Session will focus on using underglazes for painting, sgraffito and inlay techniques. She will discuss composition and the use or source material for illustrations. The use of hand made stencils and layering underglazes will be demonstrated. She will show how working with a pre planned design while staying open to creative impulses along the way is her favorite way to work.
Students in either session may meet with the instructor for a show and tell discussion between 12:15 and 12:45. Bring a bag lunch.
