with Artist, Necole Witcher2-day workshop
November 8th & 14th from 11:00am-2:30pm
Create some holiday gifts and learn how to print like the early Roycrofters. Whether you make your own greeting cards, mottos or poems you can use our collection of holiday borders and illustrations. Prints are in one color but you can add different colors with watercolor or markers at home.
Printing vocabulary will be taught so that students can identify key components of a platen press and the tools used to prep a chase, such as quoin, reglets, slugs, pica, etc. Participants will learn how to hand-set type on a composing stick, transfer it to a chase and lock it up for printing. From there students will set their locked chase in position on the press and make multiple prints.
Supplies include all materials needed to make multiple copies of their typeset quote. The tools provided during the class project; type, chase, etc. will remain the property of the Campus. Students are asked to bring a quote of no more than two lines to the first class. You are also highly recommended to bring magnification glasses if needed, and to wear appropriate clothing while working with ink and mineral spirits.
Necole Witcher is the Director of the Roycroft Campus Press, a book and stationary shop that uses 19th century techniques to create its hand-made items. She can be found in the lowest level of the The Print Shop building Wednesday through Saturday 11-4. In her spare time, she hikes and explores printmaking techniques.
