Claude Monet, Henri Matisse, Berthe Morisot, Andre Derain: these great masters took painting to fascinating new levels. You will learn about the history of these groundbreaking artists and experience painting in their thrilling styles. This class will explore their techniques, starting with the Impressionists and then moving on to the exciting, independent Fauves. We will use bright colors and simplified compositions and images with a loose style of painting and strong brushwork, keeping the images simple, without details. I will provide images to work from, and you may also bring your own.
Learning and understanding values in painting are key to success with color. We will explore elements of form, color, line, and texture, along with composition, using oil or acrylic paint on canvas. We will do exercises taking a photo image into your own impressionist painting and then into a fauvist painting. I will demonstrate each style of painting. You may follow along with planned exercises, or you can choose to work independently with your own images and receive individual instruction.
Serious beginners and seasoned painters are all welcome.
Materials: Oil or Acrylic Paint: We can mix all colors with these basic eight colors: Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Light or Pale, Cadmium Yellow Deep, Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Viridian Green or Phthalo Green.
Brushes: GOOD QUALITY BRUSHES are very important. Bring a #2 and #4 flat brush and as many #6 and #8 flat brushes as you have. The more the better! For oil, I use Signet (by Robert Simmons) bristle brushes. You can also use Escoda Clasico brushes. For acrylic, choose Pro-Stroke or other good brands.
Other: disposable 12" x 16" paper palette; odorless Turpenoid; linseed oil for oil paint; soft vine charcoal; palette knife, 2" blade (no bigger!); paper towels; 11" x 14" canvas or canvas boards.
Recommended: Masterson plastic box with lid to keep your palette and paints fresh; Silicoil jar with spring inside; small cups for linseed oil; sketchbook; simple set of color pencils; soft terry cloth rags; two tall, thin containers to hold your wet and dry brushes.
Most of these materials can be purchased at Artist & Craftsman Supply in Hillcrest if they are open. Otherwise, check online at Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff (), Jerry’s Artarama (), or Dick Blick (). Please don’t worry if you don’t have all the items the first day.
