About this Event

Instructor: Kevin Inman

July 11–13 (3 days, 9 total hours of instruction)

La Jolla Studio and On Location

$145/165 + $15 mat. fee

Paint the day away, plein air, in the sun, with the waves in view. Learn to really observe seascapes, palm trees, and other ocean amenities. The cliff-top views and jewel-toned water of the La Jolla coast can take your breath away! The first class is in the studio, and the next two classes are seaside locations.

MATERIALS: Recommended Oil or Acrylic Colors: (I like Gamblin and Rembrandt paints.)

Limited Palette: Alizarin Crimson Permanent, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White. (Limited palette is the way to go if you’d like to save money on paint, but it will limit your options in advanced painting techniques.)

Basic Palette: Cadmium Yellow Medium (or Hue), Cadmium Yellow Deep (or Hue), Cadmium Red Medium (or Hue), Alizarin Crimson Permanent, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue Hue, Titanium White, Burnt Umber, or preferred alternatives.

Expanded Palette (Optional): Ivory Black, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre.

Brushes: a range of brushes from #2 on up. (I prefer hog bristle flats and filberts.)

Supports: Please bring a stack of inexpensive materials for quick studies and exercises: a five-pack of Dick Blick canvas boards (8” x 10” or 11” x 14") or an Arches oil paper pad or a canvas pad. Two larger canvas boards or stretched canvases 11” x 14” to 16” x 20” for longer projects.

Other: linseed oil, Gamblin solvent-free gel, sketchbook, pencil, vine charcoal, palette knife, gloves, favorite photos to work from; cup or jar for solvent; paper towels; palette or paper palette pad; Gamsol or Turpenoid.

Immediately after you register, look for a confirmation email and receipt from Eventbrite. In the week preceding the class start date, you will receive another email with more details.

The safety of our students, faculty, and staff continues to be our highest priority and as such, attendees for all Spring Session in-person Athenaeum’s School of the Arts classes and workshops will either need to be vaccinated or test negative for COVID-19. In addition, masks are highly recommended, but not required. See below for details:

Fully vaccinated students must present proof of vaccination to the instructor at the first class meeting. Acceptable proof of vaccination:

1.      the physical COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card issued at the time of vaccination;

2.      a photograph of the COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card; or

3.      a digital vaccination record (which can be obtained at )

Students who do not receive COVID-19 vaccinations due to medical reasons or sincerely held religious beliefs can attend classes and workshops but will be required to present the negative results of a COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of each class meeting. Tests other than PCR, such as a rapid test or over-the-counter test, will not be accepted.

Please note that our policy may change as new guidelines and recommendations become available.

Stay safe and be well! And thank you for your continued support of our school.
