Meet in the Print Studio to explore the full range of monotype techniques. A monotype in printmaking is a technique that yields one impression from each prepared plate and sometimes a ghost print from a second impression. Monotypes have unique textural qualities. They are made by drawing on a plate with printer’s ink, oil paint, or “open” acrylics. You will learn the basics of applying media to the plate and using stencils and other materials to make impressions. We will be using both hard plates and Gelli Arts Gel Printing Plates.

Plates and all the tools needed to create your image will be provided. Drawing expertise is not required to create with this centuries-old medium. Basic monotype methods will be demonstrated, and students will get to work right away, printing unique works of art that stand on their own or can be used to create collages and other mixed-media works.

MATERIALS: A materials fee of $20 is to be paid to the instructors on the first day of class. Plates, paper, tools, and all other supplies needed will be provided. Students are encouraged to bring in textures, such as thread.

The safety of our students, faculty, and staff continues to be our highest priority and as such, attendees for all Spring Session in-person Athenaeum’s School of the Arts classes and workshops will either need to be vaccinated or test negative for COVID-19. In addition, masks are highly recommended, but not required. See below for details:

Fully vaccinated students must present proof of vaccination to the instructor at the first class meeting. Acceptable proof of vaccination:

1.      the physical COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card issued at the time of vaccination;

2.      a photograph of the COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card; or 

3.      a digital vaccination record (which can be obtained at )

Students who do not receive COVID-19 vaccinations due to medical reasons or sincerely held religious beliefs can attend classes and workshops but will be required to present the negative results of a COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of each class meeting. Tests other than PCR, such as a rapid test or over-the-counter test, will not be accepted.
