Cochineal and indigo dyes will be our focus in this 3-day workshop in July. We will immerse our white fabrics in indigo and use shibori and katazome (rice paste resist) techniques to make patterns.

Cochineal is a beautiful red dye from insects. Some call it the color of desire. Pots of the cochineal will be provided for you to explore the beautiful spectrums of red. The rich fascinating history of these dyes, which are a prominent part of the textile history of the world, plus a bibliography of books about them will be discussed the first day.

Cotton, silk, and linen fabric will be provided and prepared for dyeing the first day. A source list will be sent to you when you sign up so you may get additional fabrics to dye. Thrift stores are a good source of 100% cotton tablecloths and linens for dyeing. The materials fee covers most everything.

Look forward to diving into this magical world. Watching a green cloth emerge from the indigo tub and turn to a rich blue is indeed magical.

MATERIALS: A materials fee of $35 is to be paid to the instructor on the first day of class. All basic materials will be provided.

Immediately after you register, look for a confirmation email and receipt from Eventbrite. In the week preceding the class start date, you will receive another email with more details.

The safety of our students, faculty, and staff continues to be our highest priority and as such, attendees for all Spring Session in-person Athenaeum’s School of the Arts classes and workshops will either need to be vaccinated or test negative for COVID-19. In addition, masks are highly recommended, but not required. See below for details:

Fully vaccinated students must present proof of vaccination to the instructor at the first class meeting. Acceptable proof of vaccination:

1.      the physical COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card issued at the time of vaccination;

2.      a photograph of the COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card; or

3.      a digital vaccination record (which can be obtained at )

Students who do not receive COVID-19 vaccinations due to medical reasons or sincerely held religious beliefs can attend classes and workshops but will be required to present the negative results of a COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of each class meeting. Tests other than PCR, such as a rapid test or over-the-counter test, will not be accepted.

Please note that our policy may change as new guidelines and recommendations become available.

Stay safe and be well! And thank you for your continued support of our school.
