About this Event

Instructor: Susan Osborn

Thursday–Saturday, 10 AM–2 PM

August 25–27 (3 days, 9 total hours of instruction)

AAC Art Studio

$125/145

Follow your imagination and the patterns in fabric scraps as you combine them with painted paper cutouts and paints. This is a chance to recycle many colorful leftovers into fantasy creations. Compositional forms will be explained with a focus on movement and repetition. During the first meeting, Susan will demonstrate techniques of how to prepare paper and glue items smoothly, and she will provide some fabric scraps for your use. She will be working on a mixed-media collage while in class. The following classes will be used to complete a larger work using a still life or photographs as an inspiration.

This class can be used as a continuation of the Spring Session class as well as a welcoming start for new students. (I have a video uploaded to Google that can be shown to registered students.)

MATERIALS: Recommended or Required: 11” x 14” canvas boards; a larger than 16” x 20” piece of Masonite or canvas board; photographs to use as inspiration; magazines and newspapers for collage; fabric scraps of various patterns; scissors; a pencil; Mod Podge or acrylic medium for gluing; an inexpensive 1”–2” brush for glue application; acrylic paints; rags and paper towels; paintbrushes in various sizes; a palette (tinfoil, plastic lids, or a paper palette); a small squeegee or 4” x 6” piece of hard plastic (a fake credit card like those sent in the mail) to adhere collage.

Optional: Invisible Glove Protective Hand Coating.

Immediately after you register, look for a confirmation email and receipt from Eventbrite. In the week preceding the class start date, you will receive another email with more details.

The safety of our students, faculty, and staff continues to be our highest priority and as such, attendees for all Spring Session in-person Athenaeum’s School of the Arts classes and workshops will either need to be vaccinated or test negative for COVID-19. In addition, masks are highly recommended, but not required. See below for details:

Fully vaccinated students must present proof of vaccination to the instructor at the first class meeting. Acceptable proof of vaccination:

1.      the physical COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card issued at the time of vaccination;

2.      a photograph of the COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card; or

3.      a digital vaccination record (which can be obtained at )

Students who do not receive COVID-19 vaccinations due to medical reasons or sincerely held religious beliefs can attend classes and workshops but will be required to present the negative results of a COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of each class meeting. Tests other than PCR, such as a rapid test or over-the-counter test, will not be accepted.

Please note that our policy may change as new guidelines and recommendations become available.

Stay safe and be well! And thank you for your continued support of our school.
