About this Event

Instructor: Jean Krumbein

Wednesday, 10 AM–3 PM

July 13 (One day, 4 total hours of instruction)

La Jolla Studio

$95/85 + $5 mat. fee

Drawing portraits can be a daunting endeavor. Professional models are expensive. Friends and family have a hard time holding still, and don’t get me started on trying to draw from school pictures and fuzzy glamour shots. If you have a mirror, you have a model! By practicing on the most familiar face you know, you are free to make mistakes, experiment, insult (with humor), or flatter shamelessly. Come learn the fundamentals of portrait drawing, while having fun with the most forgiving model you’ll ever meet.

This class has 2 hours of instruction in the morning, a 1-hour lunch break, and 2 hours of continued instruction in the afternoon.

MATERIALS: Smooth drawing paper 9” x 12” or larger; soft vine charcoal and/or an 8B or 9B woodless graphite pencil with a sharpener; a kneaded eraser; a pair of scissors; glue stick—not washable if possible; sense of humor—optional but recommended.

Immediately after you register, look for a confirmation email and receipt from Eventbrite. In the week preceding the class start date, you will receive another email with more details.

The safety of our students, faculty, and staff continues to be our highest priority and as such, attendees for all Spring Session in-person Athenaeum’s School of the Arts classes and workshops will either need to be vaccinated or test negative for COVID-19. In addition, masks are highly recommended, but not required. See below for details:

Fully vaccinated students must present proof of vaccination to the instructor at the first class meeting. Acceptable proof of vaccination:

1.      the physical COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card issued at the time of vaccination;

2.      a photograph of the COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card; or

3.      a digital vaccination record (which can be obtained at )

Students who do not receive COVID-19 vaccinations due to medical reasons or sincerely held religious beliefs can attend classes and workshops but will be required to present the negative results of a COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of each class meeting. Tests other than PCR, such as a rapid test or over-the-counter test, will not be accepted.

Please note that our policy may change as new guidelines and recommendations become available.

Stay safe and be well! And thank you for your continued support of our school.
