Make art from photocopied snapshots. In this class, you will be using photocopies from your family album (or other imagery) and turning them into art. I will teach you different processes for this method: the image using stains and markers, painting the image using acrylic paints, and finally, composing a fun collage using the painted photocopy. For each method, I will show you how to take the art from start to finish. You will learn how to adhere your three paper works to canvas or board without bubbles or wrinkles. Finally, you will learn which varnishes work to preserve your art to last a lifetime. No prior art experience needed.

MATERIALS: Images: two black-and-white copies of snapshots from your family album or found ancestors from other sources. (I use an HP Officejet.)

Surfaces: 8” x 10” canvases or other substrates.

Markers: a variety of colors of permanent markers, including a flesh tone. (I use Copic markers.)

Ink: yellow or very light brown water-soluble ink (not acrylic). (I use Rangers Color Wash.)

Acrylics: variety of colors, including Burnt Sienna and Titanium White. Matte varnish with UVLS protection, 8 oz.

Other: Your tool kit of brushes, scissors, paper towels, pencil, ruler. (I use a credit card or color shaper as a burnishing tool.) One broad brush for varnish.

The safety of our students, faculty, and staff continues to be our highest priority and as such, attendees for all Spring Session in-person Athenaeum’s School of the Arts classes and workshops will either need to be vaccinated or test negative for COVID-19. In addition, masks are highly recommended, but not required. See below for details:

Fully vaccinated students must present proof of vaccination to the instructor at the first class meeting. Acceptable proof of vaccination:

1.      the physical COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card issued at the time of vaccination;

2.      a photograph of the COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card; or

3.      a digital vaccination record (which can be obtained at )

Students who do not receive COVID-19 vaccinations due to medical reasons or sincerely held religious beliefs can attend classes and workshops but will be required to present the negative results of a COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of each class meeting. Tests other than PCR, such as a rapid test or over-the-counter test, will not be accepted.

Please note that our policy may change as new guidelines and recommendations become available.

Stay safe and be well! And thank you for your continued support of our school.
