On March 1st, people around the world mourn the lives of disabled individuals who have been murdered by their partners, families, and caregivers. With each new name comes another excuse. They call it "justified". They call it "mercy killing". The victims, quickly disregarded and forgotten. The caregivers, if they are sentenced or stand trial at all, often face lighter consequences for their crimes.
At our event, after a short introduction, we will read the names of the disabled individuals we've lost. Then, we will hear speeches and stories from local community members. There will be an opportunity to learn about local and nationwide disability resources as well as the option to read about the disabled individuals we've lost over the years.
Light refreshments will be served and there will be a limited amount of sensory items, noise cancelling headphones, and activity pages for people who need them.
NOTE: While this event is open to anyone, please use discretion. We will be talking openly about subjects like violence, fatal neglect, abuse, and death. Children, people who are triggered by mentions of violence, or people who do not understand the concepts of death and dying may need to have other arrangements. There is the library and a childrens' and teens' area if you need to utilize them.
