About this Event
Give back by volunteering with our veterans at the Clara White Mission Veterans Garden. Acts of kindness help boost the esteem of the veterans who are experiencing homelessness. Bond with them over gardening and see how much of an impact you make on their lives.
The food grown in this garden is used in our culinary arts kitchen. We feed more than 1,000 homeless people a week using some of the food grown in the Veterans Garden. A tradition that started with Clara White feeding neighbors in the 1880s, the mission's feeding program provides hot, nutritious meals to our area's homeless population seven days a week.
Thunderstorms will cancel the event however, we welcome light rain. Volunteers can park in the volunteer and staff parking lot on W Ashley Street. Enter in through the front door at the Clara White Mission and check in with the receptionist. She will let EFAM staff know that your are arrived.
Volunteer tasks are physical - planting, weeding, bed prep, mulching, harvesting, washing produce, and in some cases – building projects including, hammering, screwing and cutting. Actions like digging, raking, bending, twisting, using a wheelbarrow, and lifting may feel like a full-body workout! Please let us know if anyone has physical or health limitations that we need to consider. We recommend volunteers wear clothes for outdoor work that they do not mind getting dirty. We recommend closed-toe shoes, pants, breathable long-sleeve shirts, and a hat. Also consider bringing sunscreen, bug spray, and gardening gloves. We provide drinking water but please bring a water bottle that you can refill.
We welcome groups of up to 10 to volunteer in the Mission Garden. Please email [email protected] to register a group for volunteering.
