About this Event
Tomnahuirich is now the main Cemetery for Inverness and includes many Mac/McLennan headstones. The cemetery is built on and around a hill. The meaning is thought to be either “hill of the fairies” or “hill of the yew trees”. It is 1.5 km west of Inverness and the hilltop is about 70m high – with a wide panorama over Inverness city, the Moray Firth and on the Ness valley. A visitor says: “Surely one of the most beautiful and picturesque burial grounds in Britain”.
Due to its shape, headstones are not as orderly as an ordinary cemetery and have not been completely photographed.
We are calling for volunteers to photograph Mac/McLennan headstones at Tomnahurich on Tuesday 9 July. We want to capture the map co-ordinates with the photos (i.e. with a phone). All you’ll need is a keen eye and a normal phone. Volunteers will be allocated an area to survey. Photos to be transferred once complete – retaining map co-ordinates.
Park inside the main gates on the A82 – opposite Ballifeary Road at 09:30.
This is a free event but we need you to register so we can allocate areas to each person.
