In August 1923 a group of art students and members of The Royal South Australian Society of Arts held the first drawing session of The Sketch Club, a life drawing group. One hundred years on, in this year 2023, we are celebrating a special milestone, the one hundredth year anniversary of the group. Burnside has been the home of The Sketch Club for around 30 years, and it is exciting to have one of our first celebratory events in the Burnside Council’s Pepper Street Arts Centre.The Sketch Club
Works on show are by current regulars of The Sketch Club – Life Drawing group, including beginner, amateur and professional artists of all ages. The vast variety of works include those taken directly from the Thursday night sessions of drawing, sculpting or painting, while others such as portraits and studies are as inspired by the life model. The wide array of mediums used reflects the various ways in which life drawing becomes a part of an art practice.
Modelling for the life drawing group has grown across the 100 years. During the early days it was often the artists who modelled for each other, resulting in many wonderful sketches of well known South Australian artists. As interest in life modelling expanded, so did the breadth of subjects being sketched. This exhibition brings with it that variety and interest.
As the longest running life drawing group in Australia it is not surprising that many well known artists have drawn at The Sketch Club. Artists with a strong connection to Burnside include Mary Milton, Marjorie Hahn and Dorrit Black, all having spent time drawing from the live model at Hubbe Court. This exhibition is a celebration of all artists and live models during the 100 years.
