York County, Pennsylvania, played a contributory role in the 1863 Gettysburg Campaign. One out of every seven Confederate soldiers who fought at Gettysburg and ten percent of the Union Army marched through York County in the days before the battle. York Countians murdered one of the Rebels who was raiding the area for horses. The body of an unidentified Rebel cavalryman washed up on the banks of the Susquehanna River. Townspeople discovered the dead body of a murdered Union soldier in the underbrush along a popular spring. A terrified farmer killed a Union courier who was lost and stopped at his door for directions in the middle of the night.Long-time author, Scott Mingus examines these unsolved murder mystery cold cases, as well as several other interesting stories of Confederate marauders and local murderers in his engaging book of short stories. He details a brazen train robbery in which the perpetrators stole almost $5 million (in today's money) worth of currency, gold, and government bonds. Other stories include a mysterious grave in the Pigeon Hills and the still unidentified Black volunteer who perished in the defense of the world's longest covered bridge in a sharp skirmish with oncoming Georgia infantry men.
Scott Mingus will have his books available for purchase at this event.
