Nottingham has always been famous for its dark and historic sandstone caves, having more man-made caves than anywhere else in the UK.
The Nottingham City of Caves ( also known as the Tigguo Cobauc) which lie under the Nottingham Shopping Centre, is a vast area back dating to medieval times. Beneath the houses, shops and offices of Nottingham lat hundreds of caves. Few people in Nottingham are aware of this labyrinth of caves which exists underneath the city streets. People have lived and worked in these caves for over 1000 years.
In 1941 some of the caves were joined and expanded to house 86 public air raid shelters to protect the inhabitants during the bombing attacks of the Second World War.
There are a few known ghosts that haunt the City of Caves, most notably a shadow figure that carries a lantern the caves, before vanishing into thin air. The voices of children and families can be heard echoing throughout the cave system. A darker presence is also seen and felt at the rear of the cave system., with poltergeist activity being reported, including rocks being thrown at guests, and disgusting smells whenever this negative energy approaches you.
