Circe's Consort is a new concept in old music. Explore the music of the 16th and 17th centuries focusing on baroque aesthetics and the improvisatory influence of the Florentine Camerata of 1573, a seminal meeting of humanist scholars from diverse disciplines. What was then thought of as a return to Classical Greek style of drama and musical performance instead created a revolution, one which has impacted all modern Western music ever since.
Annalisa Ewald, classical and baroque guitarist, was a protégée of Sophocles Papas. She attended the San Francisco Conservatory and holds a degree in Classical Guitar Performance from Bard College. Mentored for twenty years by the profound Patrick O’Brien, Head of the Juilliard Historical Plucked Strings Department, she was a member of the New York Continuo Collective, a workshop for baroque performance practice, for over a decade. Having served as the inaugural performer for the Cosmos Club Concert series in Washington, D.C., she has since won numerous grants from the New York State Council on the Arts and earned the No. 8 spot on the Billboard Traditional Classical chart with her critically acclaimed debut solo album. Her collected transcriptions of tangos is pending publication.
Richard Spendio attended SUNY at Geneseo (music and theater history) and the University of Pisa, Italy (Renaissance Studies) as an undergraduate, followed by graduate studies at Indiana University, Bloomington. Moving to New York to continue harp study, he began performing professionally on pedal harp in 1976. He was a charter member of the Historical Harp Society at its founding (1984). There, the friendships he developed provided invaluable exchanges for the methods of adapting modern harp techniques to the single and double row harps of the 16th and 17th centuries. While continuing to perform on the modern Pedal Harp, he has been avidly pursuing the Renaissance and Baroque instruments, and since 2015, has been a member of the New York Continuo Collective, where playing with lutes, theorbos and baroque guitars provides a great opportunity for study and performance.
