La réalisatrice Janna Ji Wonders raconte l'histoire des femmes de sa famille au cours du siècle dernier. L'élément unificateur et le témoin silencieux du film est le lac Walchensee en Bavière, où la famille a ouvert en 1920 un café qui existe encore aujourd'hui. Apa, son impressionnante fondatrice, lègue l'affaire à Norma, son aînée, qui continue à la gérer, même si elle est âgée. Les filles de Norma, Anna et Frauke, quittent le lac pour s'émanciper et parcourir le monde en tant que musiciennes.

Bien que leurs voyages les amènent à parcourir le monde et que Janna - la réalisatrice - naisse en chemin, le destin les ramène toujours à Walchensee, où Grand-mère Norma devient une figure importante pour sa petite-fille Janna.

Quelle est la signification de la maison ? Dans quelle mesure sommes-nous façonnés par nos origines ? La réalisatrice Janna Ji Wonders trouve des indices dans les liens qui unissent les quatre générations de femmes de sa famille et dans leurs approches très différentes de la vie.

Director Janna Ji Wonders tells the story of the women in her family over the last century. The film’s unifying element and silent witness is Lake Walchensee in Bavaria, where the family opened a café in 1920 which still exists today. Its impressive founder Apa bequeaths the business to her first-born Norma who continues to run it, even in her advancing years. Norma’s daughters Anna and Frauke however, leave the lake to liberate themselves and travel the world as musicians .

Even though their travels bring them around the world and Janna - the filmmaker - is born on the way, destiny always brings them back to Walchensee, where Grandma Norma becomes an important figure for her granddaughter Janna.

What is the meaning of home? To what extent are we shaped by our origins? Director Janna Ji Wonders finds clues in the bond between these four generations of women in her family and their very different approaches to life.
