Gianni, Nicola e Antonio, dopo aver militato nelle file partigiane ed avere maturato insieme ferventi ideali, "scoppiata" la pace si disperdono: Antonio fa il portantino al San Camillo di Roma; Gianni diviene avvocato; Nicola insegna a Nocera Inferiore, si sposa e lotta da idealista per un cinema che trasformi la società. Luciana è la ragazza che Antonio scopre e che Gianni prima gli strappa e poi abbandona per fare carriera....

Die drei italienischen Partisanen Antonio (Nino Manfredi), Gianni (Vittorio Gassman) und Nicola (Stefano Satta Flores) teilen nicht nur den Kampf gegen die deutsche Wehrmacht im Zweiten Weltkrieg, sie haben sich auch den Idealen des Sozialismus verschrieben. Das Zusammenleben der Menschen soll nicht länger durch Macht und Ungerechtigkeit geprägt sein. Die Wege zwischen Gianni und den anderen beiden trennen sich jedoch, als Gianni seinem Freund Antonio dessen große Liebe Luciana (Stefania Sandrelli) wegnimmt. Die Trennung von seinen Freunden führt schließlich dazu, dass Giannis Idealismus aufgeweicht wird. Während er zunächst noch mit sich ringen muss, um die Stelle in der Firma eines windigen Bauunternehmers anzutreten, spielen sozialistische Überlegungen mit der Zeit keine Rolle mehr. Gianni nimmt den Karriereweg, während seine ehemaligen Freunde an ihren Zielen festhalten.

Gianni, Antonio and Nicola were resistant during the war, sharing everything like brothers. After the war, they returned to their lives. Antonio as a nurse in a Roman hospital where he fell madly in love with a girl named Luciana. He also milits for the Popular Front. Gianni entered as an assistant a law firm who's head, La Rosa, is running as a deputy candidate for the Socialist Party. Nicola returned to teaching in a small town high school, married a woman named Gabriella and had a child, Tommasino. He is an intellectual idealist, active member of the communist party, as well as a passionate film buff.
The story begins three years after the war, as Antonio is lunching with Luciana in a restaurant when Gianni happens to pass by. Antonio is thrilled and he starts talking about the days they resistant life. Luciana and Gianni don't really listen to him, as they fall in love in silence with each others....
