🎬 Cine & Debate: On March 6th we invite you to watch the Guatemalan movie Ixcanul with us! 🇬🇹
🎥 Ixcanul (2015) – Directed by Jayro Bustamante
🗣️ Language: Spanish & Kaqchikel (with English subtitles)
⏳ Runtime: 91 min
About the movie:
Set against the backdrop of an active volcano, Ixcanul (which means "volcano" in Kaqchikel) tells the moving story of María, a 17-year-old Mayan girl who lives and works on a coffee plantation. Her parents have arranged for her to marry the plantation’s overseer, but María dreams of something more. When she places her trust in a young worker who promises to take her to the United States, her life takes an unexpected turn—one that exposes the harsh injustices faced by indigenous women in Guatemala.
✨ A visually stunning and emotionally powerful tale of tradition, dreams, and survival, Ixcanul offers an eye-opening look at the challenges faced by indigenous women in Guatemala.
March 8th is a day to celebrate the achievements of women but also to highlight the ongoing fight for gender equality, reproductive rights, and freedom from oppression. Ixcanul brings these themes to life through the journey of María.
María's story is one shared by millions of women around the world—women who are denied control over their own bodies, who are silenced by tradition, and who struggle against gender-based violence, poverty, and inequality. The film is not just a glimpse into life in Guatemala; it is a universal call to action for women's rights and social justice.
Themes in the film:
🔹 Forced marriage & lack of autonomy over women’s lives
🔹 The struggle for reproductive rights and access to healthcare
🔹 The intersection of gender and indigenous oppression
🔹 The resilience of women fighting for a different future
