Cost: Early Bird Registration Fee: $25 for members, $75 for non-members, Students free. Early Bird registration ends June 7, 2024 11:59pm

In order to pay for the speakers for the event, we needed to increase our fees for the membership. Also, the venue does not allow us to serve a meal, so please plan accordingly. There will be some small snacks and water for refreshments.

Course Title: Obstructive Sleep Apnea - Prevalence, Thoughts, Research & Treatment

Course Description:
The course will discuss OSA, its prevalence in society, treatment protocols & alternative therapies.
Course Objectives:
1) One should be able to recognize OSA's significance.
2) One should be able to understand dental treatment of OSA and its importance.
3) One should be able to understand the alternative therapies available for OSA.
Speaker Bio:
Dr. Osterday, a graduate of Ohio State, practiced as a General Dentist in Anderson Twp for 14 years. Complications from carpal tunnel surgery forced him to leave his practice. He worked as a consultant at Procter & Gamble for 4 years, as a liaison in the Professional Oral Health division. Upon completion of the P&G role, he started with a Dental Advisory Team at Lifetime Financial Growth. He helps dental health professionals, nationwide, to better understand the financial side of the profession. Lastly, he is a founding doctor of Sleep Apnea Solutions of Cincinnati, located in Rookwood. Dr. Osterday practices in the only office in Cincinnati that is solely dedicated to Sleep Apnea Dentistry and is staffed exclusively by Diplomates of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine. He has been published in Dental Economics on the topics of Disability Insurance and Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Course Title: Behavioral Approaches to Dental Care for Patients with Developmental and Behavioral Disabilities
Course Description: Children with autism and other developmental disabilities (DDs) often have behaviors and sensitivities that make dental treatment one of the most difficult types of healthcare for them to receive. Learn strategies and adaptations to best provide support for patients with developmental and behavioral conditions in pediatric dentistry.
Course Objectives:
Explore adaptive techniques to use with children with DDs and challenging behaviors to minimize distress and maximize coping during dental encounters.
Discuss how interdisciplinary collaboration, when combined with supportive interventions, leads to increased positive outcomes for patients, families, and the dental team.
Explore approaches for dental desensitization during routine hygiene encounters to build trust and rapport through individualized care strategies.
Identify strategies on how to best respond to challenging behaviors incorporating trauma-informed principles.
Speaker Bios:
Kerri Birkett is a Certified Child Life Specialist at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital (CCH) working with the Adaptive Care Team. Her work includes facilitating and providing direct support for patients with neurodevelopmental and behavioral disorders by providing individualized education, preparation, procedural support, and therapeutic play. Kerri earned her Bachelors of Arts in Health Promotion from the University of Iowa and Masters of Science in Health Science at Northern Kentucky University. Kerri is a handler to Cincinnati’s first hospital facility dog, incorporating the use of animal-assisted therapy in her daily practice. Kerri is a graduate of the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) program and holds a certification in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention. Kerri provides routine education and training to CCH dentistry staff, the local community, and has presented nationally on supporting patients in dentistry. Outside of her clinical work, Kerri enjoys spending time with her family and pack of dogs, hiking, baking, and happy hour with friends.

Sydney Stigge is a Certified Child Life Specialist at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital working on the Adaptive Care Team. Her work includes facilitating and providing direct support for patients with neurodevelopmental and behavioral disorders by providing individualized education, preparation, procedural support, and therapeutic play. Sydney provides support in the dental clinic, utilizing personalized preparation materials and care adaptations to foster positive coping strategies during dental encounters. Sydney earned her Bachelor’s in Therapeutic Recreation, her Masters in Child Life at the University of Iowa, and holds a certification in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention. Outside of work, Sydney enjoys spending time with her family, walking her dog, and going to the lake.
