In celebration of CIERA's 15th anniversery, enjoy a free public lecture by CIERA Co-Founder Professor Emeritus Dave Meyer, activities for the whole family, and telescope observing at the historic Dearborn Observatory!
Among the many wonders of the night sky, our eyes are drawn to a diffuse band of light stretching from horizon to horizon. This "Milky Way" glows with the light of ~300 billion stars amidst vast clouds of interstellar gas and stardust. It constitutes the disk-shaped stellar backbone of the large spiral galaxy (100,000 light-years across) that is our home. In this talk, I will utilize the sharp eyes of the Hubble and Webb Space Telescopes to explore the rich tapestry of the Milky Way Galaxy through spectacular images of its stars, star clusters, and nebulae. In discussing the scientific stories behind these images, I will weave them together to examine the evolution and eventual fate of the Galaxy.
Using the Hubble Space Telescope and the facilities of Kitt Peak National Observatory, Dr. Meyer specializes in the measurement of weak interstellar and extragalactic absorption lines in the optical and ultraviolet spectra of stars and quasars. Such measurements provide important information about the composition, chemistry, structure, and physical conditions of intervening gas clouds in the Milky Way and other galaxies.
About CIERA
For 15 years, CIERA has promoted research and education in astrophysics through the continued support of independent postdoctoral fellows, advanced graduate and undergraduate research, a vigorous visiting researchers program, and multi-faceted seminars, education, and public outreach programs. Special emphasis is given to interdisciplinary connections with computer science, applied math, statistics, electrical and mechanical engineering, planetary science, education and the arts.
Parking is available across the street. Anyone may park in the Northwestern lot after 5pm.
