In 2022 the Flinders University tasked System Solutions Engineering to degasify or electrify the Mark Oliphant Building, to delete the use of natural gas from the site. A feasibility study demonstrated that electrification was not a simple “replace a boiler with a heat pump” exercise and an alternative technology was therefore considered appropriate.
The result was utilising a thermal energy storage system [TES] and Isothermix that SSE developed in collaboration with the University of SA over the past few years (all SA organisations).
The design is a hybrid solution that allowed storage of up to 400 kWh of latent heat using Phase Change Materials (PCMs); i.e. eutectic mixtures of salt hydrates with a suitable melting/freezing temperature.
This Isothermix Thermal Battery is a static stainless steel heat exchanger immersed and surrounded by this mixture of Salt Hydrates which have been stabilised and blended to melt and freeze at specific or selected temperatures.
