Sean Scullion and Bob Beagrie will be speaking about their latest publications.
Séan Scullion is an officer in the Royal Engineers. Brought up in Spain during the later stages of General Franco’s regime and the country’s subsequent transition to democracy, he studied Spanish at the University of Nottingham. He has written widely on military matters and was a Spanish writer for Collins and Oxford University Press. Sean will be talking about Churchill’s Spaniards - the story of the recruitment, training and deployment of often battle hardened Spanish Republican soldiers into the British Army in the Second World War. Some of these men made their homes on Teesside after the war. Sean has used wide ranging material from Britain, France and Spain as well as previously unpublished eyewitness and official accounts along with ground breaking new research.
Bob Beagrie Bob Beagrie is a poet, playwright and senior lecturer in creative writing at Teesside University. He has performed at numerous festivals and venues nationally and internationally, including The Royal Festival Hall – South Bank Centre, Theatre Royal Newcastle, Crossing Borders Festival – Amsterdam, Kiasma Museum of Modern Art – Helsinki, Down By The Laiturri Festival – Turku, The Haganum Festival – Den Haag, The Dylan Thomas Centre – Swansea, The Poet's Café – Silvers, Portugal and The Poetry Café London. As well as collaborating with writers and musicians he has also worked closely with visual artists on public artworks and with theatre company Three Over Eden.
Romanceros is a sequence of poems inspired by The Spanish Civil War and The International Brigade, which Bob Beagrie been working on for around four years now. It is now a 35 poem collection, published by Drunk Muse Press - https://www.drunkmusepress.com/shop/p/harvest-moon-cup-5fc72-js83d a radical Scottish publisher. With Stuart Forth of Project Lono, Bob has have taken eight of the poems from Romanceros and created a 20 minute long dramatic soundscape of music, sound effects and spoken word recordings.
