A star cast and sumptuous visuals, is a rare thriller about pope selection, buoyed by secrets and scandals and a shocking twist ending. But perhaps the most exciting part about the film is how closely its drama tracks with real life.

The film tells the tale of a group of high-ranking cardinals who are all called to the Vatican in the days after a pope’s death to assemble and choose a new holy leader. From the start, we are introduced to four distinct factions, led by opposing candidates for the papacy. Cardinal Bellini (Stanley Tucci) is the brash American progressive, a close friend of the late pope who believes that the Catholic Church should do more to include women and welcome LGBTQ+ parishioners. Cardinal Tedesco (Sergio Castellitto) is a delightfully villainous, reactionary traditionalist who is pushing for a return to much more conservative church leadership. Cardinal Tremblay (John Lithgow) plays the quietly ambitious moderate who seems, for much of the movie, to be a safe choice for the conclave, until he betrays the final top candidate, Cardinal Adeyemi (Lucian Msamati), a charming African conservative who opposes same-sex marriage but would signal a massive sea change for the Catholic Church’s traditionally European hierarchies.
