Chuck Mead
Chuck Mead is a country singer with a rock ’n’ roll soul, best known as a founding member of the influential ’90s alt-country band BR5-49. A renowned songwriter and producer, Mead helped shape the neo-traditional country movement that continues to echo through Americana and roots music today.
His latest release, Lonely Boy, was recorded with his hillbilly power trio The Stalwarts and features the title track co-written with the legendary Marty Stuart.
“We initially envisioned it as a Johnny Horton-style song,” says Mead, referencing Johnny Horton. “But when the band played it, it transformed into a Johnny Horton backed by Johnny Thunders, which we thought was cool.”
That collision of styles has long defined Mead’s work. During his time in BR5-49, he penned “Little Ramona (Gone Hillbilly),” a song about a punk-rock kid who grows into country music and discovers that both worlds share the same raw honesty and rebel spirit.
Mead’s own musical journey mirrors that arc. He grew up playing in his family’s country band, steeped in the sounds of Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, and Tammy Wynette, alongside early rock ’n’ roll icons like Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, and Chuck Berry. Then came punk and new wave. Ramones, Eddie and the Hot Rods, The Jam, Generation X, and The Clash all found their way into his musical DNA.
With The Stalwarts, Chuck Mead has made that full-circle trip once again, describing the high-energy, straight-from-the-hip hillbilly rock ’n’ roll sound simply as “The Who on hay bales.”
