Most of us know Mr. Amend, as he is a tremendously influential and respected artist in our community. Chris Amend is a Wyoming Native, born in Southwest Wyoming and raised in Worland. He majored in Art at the University of Wyoming, earning a BFA (1972) and an MFA (1974) in studio art. He taught briefly at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, and returned to Wyoming in 1978. He settled with his family in Gillette, where he taught art for 29 years, teaching at Stocktrail Elementary, Recluse School, and for 24 years at Campbell County High School. In addition, he taught extension classes for Sheridan College, and classes in drawing and painting for Gillette College. He has served as a visiting artist and has offered numerous workshops at various places around Wyoming, including AVA Community Art Center in Gillette. He served as Instructor of Visual Art for three summers at the Bartlesville, Oklahoma Multi-Arts Youth Camp. He retired from full-time teaching in 2007, and has since devoted himself full-time to his own work as an artist.
Since 1972, Chris has pursued art as a discipline and a way of life. He has exhibited his work in venues ranging from small Wyoming towns to New York, Chicago, and Paris, and has work in private collections throughout the United States.
Having discovered, at the age of six, that he had an innate ability to draw, he has since devoted his life to exploring the possibilities and demands of the visual expression of ideas. Always firmly rooted in and informed by the disciplines of classical drawing, his mature work seeks to find universal truths by delving deeply into the idiosyncratically personal realms of his own inner visions.
