This year marks the 20th anniversary of a St. Louis holiday classic – Christmas in the Kitchen. On Tuesday, December 10, 2024, Mitzi MacDonald and Keltic Reign will perform their annual benefit show in a Celtic Christmas kitchen set on the stage of the Sheldon Concert Hall. As always, everyone is invited to experience the delight of Irish and Scottish dancers on stage and a special visit from a Scottish Santa, in his kilt, playing the bagpipes. During the show, audience members are invited on stage to enjoy a cup of tea (compliments of Traveling Tea) and some homemade cookies as they enjoy the performance “in the kitchen.” Quite simply it’s a show like no other!
The show has a rich history of bringing together some of St. Louis’ best local musicians. The shows have includedtrumpeter and vocalist Lady J Huston, singers Joe Mancuso, Anita Rosamond, Ken Martin, Tim Mead and the acapella group- The Wee Heavies, to name a few. The show is based on a social tradition from Mitzi’s homeland of Nova Scotia, Canada, called a Nova Scotia Kitchen Party where friendsgather to play music together and dance, and it all takes place in the friendliest room in the house – the kitchen!
But there is so much more to this show.As Mitzi MacDonald puts it, “In our 20th year, we are delighted to bring this multi-sensory event back to the Sheldon, which greatly supports this show happening there every year.” She adds, “Thanks to our wonderful sponsors – Christmas in the Kitchen has donated, so far, nearly $143,000, $142,780.00 so far to local charities, and there is so much more to do!”
Christmas in the Kitchen, which includes a silent auction, benefits Annie Malone’s Children and Family Services and Join Hands ESL. The program has donated thousands of beautiful toys to these organizations with a toy drive that happensindependent of the show with collection boxes around the city and online purchases through Amazon (more information can be found at mitzimacdonald.com). Everyone who attends is encouraged to bring an unwrapped new toy or teen gift. The concert organizers also collect canned goods and gently - used winter coats and boots in adult and children's sizes.
Those who have supported Christmas in the Kitchen over the years include The O’Brien Law Firm, Stewart Family Trust, Dr. Susan Laws, Laws Dental, First Mid-America Credit Union, Jim Campbell Photography, Apple Cleaners,UMB Bank, The Scottish Partnership for Arts and Education, St. Louis Irish Arts, and the St. Louis Tionol. Come to the Sheldon and fill your heart with music and giving this Christmas!
