We’ve all said it at some point: “I just can’t wait until…”—until graduation, until vacation, until the test results come back normal. Waiting can fill us with anxiety when we fear what’s ahead, or with excitement when we anticipate “good news of great joy.”
Advent invites us into a different kind of waiting—waiting with hope.
Just as the Israelites waited in exile for deliverance, the prophet Isaiah offered words of encouragement that still speak to us today:
Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God…
He gives strength to the weary…
Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength…
They will soar on wings like eagles. —Isaiah 40:28–31
This Christmas, we wait for the Christ child to come again into our lives—to renew our spirits and fill us with hope, peace, joy, and love, the gifts we remember as we light the Advent candles.
